This can be true, but to say you can't have success because you lack either is insane.
Months ago two farmers with a dirt pig background decided to breed a sow. They don't have a show pig complex, they don't run a boar stud, and other than looking at some picture in some magazine they don't personally know any of the people who do. They were proud of the litter that came, but it was sale barn bound. One of the pigs was put on feed by a family less than 10 miles down the road who no more than a few years ago had absolutely no connections to the show pig world. After hours of feeding, care, and walking buy preteen girls, no not their parents, the actual girls, that pig went on to win Reserve Champion in breed at a state fair in the midwest. Yesterday, that pig went on to win a heater class and easily coast to being breed Champion at the American Royal. A pig from a litter that was a few days away from being in a sale barn ring rolled right over high sellers and bigger names to win breed champion at a National level show.
We might as well take this a step farther...
Meanwhile, the majority of what we now call our "pig farmers" won't own their buildings until they're basically worn out, don't own their pigs, don't own or even raise their feed, and sadly will basically be spreading **** for their living in the future are turning their nose up at families choosing to use pigs to teach their child very valuable life lessons, and some of them are even having success doing it on the National stage.
It's mind boggling how many of the ag world look down on these programs and refuse to see that little girl is going to grow up to vote. You can bet everything you own that we're going to need that vote in the future and should be very glad she has those memories from her youth. It won't hurt that she might be putting the lessons learned through the program toward becoming a productive member of society either.
The pigs could glow in the dark and have 6 legs for all I care, because at the end of the day, the pigs don't even matter.
