1 hour east of ol cheyenne
Right wrong or indifferent I wipe the "square" ring groove of filterhousing with a clean rag then hit it with brakeclean (let it dry "evaporate") then use grease on the side of the "square " ring that goes into the housing vertical , horizontal or upside down (depending upon engine or series) never have a problem. Then I put a bit of new oil on the lip of filter with my finger smearing it around the rim. Then install the filter. I use a dab of the same grease on the oil plug threads also.
PS I blow off around the filter with compressed air and or brake clean BEFORE removing oil plug or filter.
I have opened up the box of other filters where the attached seal is damaged when new. I prefer the separate seal ring.
