Depends on what is in the ingredients. Non refrigerated items such as oils in potato chips will go rancid by their expiration date, at least by my experience. Otherwise items like salad I've found go bad by the date stamped on the container. Other items such as Miracle Whip will still be good a year after their date. Some expiration dates are valid, others like those stating "Use by" or "Best by" are mostly marketing ploys.
