Milk is one pet peve of mine, one bad before the date and the next jug is good for a week after...

A lot of dry goods and canned stuff can last a very long time, but the clock starts ticking once you open it up.

Some ingredients used to make food items are old before the food item gets made, but it still lasts nearly forever.
