Leesburg, Ohio | We have always applied 20 gallons of 28% N after planting, pre-emerge, as a carrier for herbicides, and to give it an early shot of N without having to carry it on the planter.
This early application has usually been custom applied, but I did it all myself this year for the first time.
The bulk of our N is applied side-dress at ankle-high to hip-high with a coulter and knife applicator putting it in the ground. We like this for getting the N on closer to the time when the plant needs it, and for getting it in the ground for better efficiency and less loss.
