Central MN
Are there any open wounds on the leg near the break? Typically sooner that you can splint it or cast it the better the outcome. Otherwise there's increased chance of more muscle damage and bruising Ect. that can delay the healing and be a source for infection which causes a worse prognosis. Depending on the case ill throw them on antibiotics. One of the big things is making sure the cast splint or bandage stays dry. As far as prognosis goes open fractures or compound fractures, animals with little to no feeling or animals that have poor blood flow are going to have much lower chances of survival. I have had great luck with back legs in the location you describe.
