Subject: How Many Can Make Fungicide Application Pay In Corn?

Western Ky.

So, I had fungicide applied to my corn on the land I own. It was applied by helicopter. The bill came to $37 and change per acre. In looking at our university trials ( University of Kentucky) concerning fungicide response the range of response is from 3 bpa to 14 bpa. At a 14 bpa response and $3.50 per bushel corn that is an increase of $49 per acre and equates to a net increase of $12 per acre. The kicker is when moisture at harvest is added to the equation. Our corn that has had fungicide applied is extremely slow to dry down. We have no capabiliti to dry our corn. Our local elevators charge $.05 per bushel per point. Yes, I know we are getting hosed but that is how it is. If corn makes 200 bpa and is 2% wetter the added drying cost is $20 per acre. That added to the cost of fungicide application makes it money losing proposition in my mind. What am I getting wrong?
