Subject: RE: Supplement grazing calves

West Central Illinois
I used to have byproducts and corn blended at the mill but then one day i realized i could just get straights for the same price or cheaper and have higher protein values in doing so then I quit even supplementing straight corn to my stockers. I feed 1.1% bodyweight to my stockers i have on grass right now in corn gluten pellets and I get good gains out of them. Last group I ran through like this was a group of medium-large frame plain heifers that I had ralgro implants and fed an r1500 mineral to and got 1.83 lb. of gain per day out of them and they didn't get fleshy either. I do mix in additional cal. carb. to balance out the calcium:phosphorous ratio I usually shoot for like 1.75:1 just to be safe. You might be short on protein though depending on what kind of gains you're shooting for. My goal on stockers is 2 lb. per day but I sell them as backgrounded I don't finish the bulk of them out, on 5 weights I give them 1/2 lb. of soybean meal too to try and reach my goal for gains.
