Chris is correct. If your machine starts and the screen lights up, it's working fine. The software gets corrupted over time from the garbage those nerds pipe into the system.
Clean your hard drive off and reload all the software or hire a geek to do it. I did it a month ago and the machine is just like new out of the box.
