a standard dow index or SP500 index should do it.

I recommend the bogleheads.org website, they have a link to a 2 or 3 fund portfolio (depending if you want international exposure)... all low cost index funds. Just figure out the percentage of each that you want, but the one that matches up with your brokerage house (vanguard, fidelity, schwab, etc) and invest regularly into that mix.

we have an sp500 and a bond fund (so we do 2 fund, not 3, didn't want intl)

a lot will do an equity index, total bond index, total international index. this gets you the broadest coverage to match the markets step for step.
