Subject: Index fund for Roth IRA?

What is a good index fund or any fund to put my IRA money in? I’ve somewhat followed the stock market since I got a 401k 20 plus years ago but am no Warren buffet. I did start a trading account a couple of years ago and made a little money but for the most part not good at picking stocks. I keep hearing about index funds but don’t know where to start. I want to invest this account in one up to 3 funds, leave it alone and not “manage” it. My wife has had a Roth for years and it is only in American funds and has done well for the most part. I have a pension and 401k but decided to do this because I have money in the bank collecting .2% interest. Someone school me please.
