Subject: RE: Cover crops for a beginner

What issues are making you want to cover crop? Compaction, erosion, water infiltration/ reduce runoff...

Start small. Don't convert the whole Farm next year that's a lot of money. if you pick a field and just do 1 round of whatever your sprayer width is. That way the rest of the field is done normal but fast and easy for you to just work on that edge.

Depending on your farm and the condition of your soil reducing tillage and putting in some cover crops you might notice right away in a couple season huge improvements or it might take a number of years to fix whatever you want fixed.

Just stick to that one spot for several years until you get it figured out then take it to the rest of the farm.

There's a lot happening with the soil as soon as you stop tillage fertility management it's going to be a huge factor for some folks. Remove tillage and you remove that early flush of nutrients so in some crops like corn pop up or a good to buy to program become very important.

If you have a local co-op that tells you it don't work here find a new co-op because clearly they do not understand soil or soil life.
