I found some of my lower fertility spots-were actually some of my better yielding-was an eye opener. But when you pull 220 bu year after year off one spot and 170 off another-due to soil type or drainage difference or whatever-a decade of that draws down the fertility.
So I guess what I am saying is yes I like VRT, put the $ where will do most good. No use building up areas that are limited by some other factors. Cost per acre is pretty small compared to cost of fertilizer-especially if you do it yourself.
I haven't reached the point where we are cutting back overall-mostly because I have fertility clauses in my rented farms that require removal rate. But at least I can be smart about it. | |
