Fulton County Ohio | I have variable rate applied some nutrients for awhile. Started with lime and dry fertilizer. No yield data to prove an economical return. Added a second liquid fertilizer system on the planter for variable rate phosphorus this year. The incentive was a State of Ohio program called H2Ohio. With the onset of COVID-19 the Governor pulled funding and left us holding the bag. Currently it appears the program will be funded in 2021. It originally was a four year commitment from the State. There was a huge effort to sell the program last winter. The other incentive was the future threat that you will not farm in this watershed without lowering nutrient levels. In order to avoid mandatory rules we are voluntarily attempting to satisfy political and bureaucratic guidelines. Would it pay without a funded program? Likely the lime would pay first. Beyond that the returns would be difficult to find other than reduced use. That is one opinion. | |
