NW Iowa | I had this very issue. The former owners (estate heirs) sued. We got a summary judgement and it was thrown out. Summary judgement meant that they had no legal basis to sue. Judge said I was my own landlord. I had also offered to pro rate the rent as closing was in Sept.. Judge said no pro rate necessary, rent was due in Nov. As of Nov you are the landlord.
I am talking second half rent though here. First half I had paid in March prior to my purchase.
Consult an attorney but you assuredly don’t owe them rent.
