S Illinois | In the heart of the wheat/DC bean area here and have a few observations.
USDA does count both crops so acres can be double counted each year.
When it comes wheat/DC beans, the wheat takes no yield hit and normally DC beans are only 10-25% off full season beans.
What would be a problem with the short corn/DC bean rotation would be a compromise of both yields. Doing that rotation means more time than normal is spent in vegetative stages between the corn and beans together than normal. So instead of maximizing the growing season for grain fill, more time is building the factory for the grain fill.
Also with wheat, the normally unusable to summer crops growth timeframe of mid to late fall and early spring is used to its maximum.
