Amish-- decent carpenters??? You got to be kidding
It may well be that way in your area, I have no idea. But here in Southern Pa, ( and East into Lancaster) decent Carpenters are almost without fail either Amish or Mennonites. Often Old Order Mennonites.
Carpentry requires more manual labor than a lot of jobs. The Amish and Mennonites as a general rule have a better work ethic than the average "Englishman" Hence the reason the Carpentry trade is full of plain people.
