Ron, I switched from HP to Brother for the same reason. Just bought a new toner cartridge two days ago. Black, 3000 pages @ 5% coverage they say...close to $80 at Office Max.

Figured I was getting hosed, so I went to Amazon while in the store. Seems there are generic replacements that are much cheaper and do get good reviews. But...Brother (and probably everyone else) is now integrating chips into their toner cartridges, that help keep track of your toner level -- and tells the printer whether you are using OEM equipment. I had some reports that needed to get printed, so I swallowed hard and went with Brother.

Did some more digging later and there appears to be no problem with short-line replacement parts...though you may have to recycle the chip, so your printer is satisfied all systems are normal. I am sure this will void any warranty on your printer and would never advise anyone try it, of course, but it sounds like one way to cut your toner bill considerably.
