As mentioned, try Apple support, even their online Knowledge Base.
Another thought, Some models have a small battery on the motherboard that can cause similar
problems to what you described, if it goes bad (will boot from system disk but not hard drive).
Five years used to be the average lifespan. I don't think they are necessary on the newer systems.
Just an idea. Let us know when you find the problem.
