From what I understand and have been learning, yes. But I can not say what all is different as I have not learned that yet. The portables that I have seen on craigslist and while searching for info, seem to not have computer hook up to record "apnea events"? and stuff like that. The portables seem to be basic in nature and from what I see, usually have or will fit into some sort of travel or carrying case easier.
