Western Iowa
What is a 'good sunflower disk'?

Does it have nice sharp blades? 24" blades? Run it with the wheels off the ground?

A modern heavy disk with 24" blades that are new or sharpened every year or 2 will do a pretty good job if you have enough horse to run it with the carry wheels not touching the ground.

Also what makes a big difference for me is what maturity corn, harvest date, and when I do the tillage. Here 106-109 day corn will always work down better than 113-114 day corn. Corn combined at 22% early can give the stalks more time to break down than waiting until 16%. Also if you chase the combine with the disk, it can be nice to build up the trash in the soil, but if you can wait until shortly before freeze up, you can turn the soil much blacker. Finally a sunny day verses out disking in misty weather makes a heck of a difference as well, even with a big disk.

All this is kinda disking 101, but it is surprising how many guys forget it over time. All of it can make one heck of a difference on how black the seedbed is come planting time...….
