southern MN | In 1993 I didn’t get about 20%-25% of our farm planted.
It was too wet way too long, into late July. Our season is too short to plant anything in August and have any sort of harvest. I believe the dairy neighbor put some sort of sorghum Sudan something or other in, but it mostly got used for green manure I forget why it didn’t work out well.
The parts not planted were odd shapes scattered throughout the farm, no access to plant an acre here, 3 acres there, without driving over a bunch of what I did get planted.
I did harvest a fair amount of pigeon grass bales (foxtail) off those acres and the cattle were pretty happy with those bales, so I don’t know if that counts as ‘something planted.’
I think family farming would be better without the current insurance program offered by the govt, I likely agree with your opinion on that. It is a ‘big picture, long term’ view of things I guess.
