KS and NE in eastern 3rd | If I didn't think I could make a profit off the inputs no I wouldn't plant. Here corn would be a slim chance of a profit and about 10 days left on beans before the chance of a profit is less likely. So to answer your question no I wouldn't plant something just to lose more money.
It's easy to not carry insurance farming in Illinois but in the western corn belt that's not an option. Last 2 years my 180 aph ground raised, 50 bu corn then 70 bu corn. Could you handle those losses on 2k acres without cattle or insurance? Having cattle is a form of insurance for row crop farmers imo.

Over the last 2 droughts here I have collected over 600k in insurance proceeds. I'd be in a tight spot without crop insurance.
