Chipping is hard, slow work. If the throat is 8" x 8", it will take much less than an 8" branch. Most branches have some curve of have protrusions, ( branches) so all that must fit through the 8" x 8" throat.. If you happen to find a perfectly straight 8" branch, the chipper will chip it but it will be slow.
