Subject: 04 Dodge Cummins charging issue

Pierce county WI
So, the other night I noticed the battery gauge on my Dodge was under 14 volts, but well within the normal part of the gauge. Yesterday morning I started it, and went to load some stuff to go tiling, and when I got back in it the check gauges light was on and it only showed 8 volts. The radio, fan, lights ECT were all fine. I shut it off and then started it right back up, no problem at all. Out of the blue the gauge started reading and the light went off. I drove it yesterday and all day today. On the drive home from tiling today, it did it again. It went from 12 to 8 immediately. So, when I got home it I put a multi meter on the batteries and the alternator. 11.5 volts. Turning on lights or accessories didn't change it. I realize 11.5 is low, but it's more than 8. So is the gauge the problem, or is the alternator bad the gauge isn't real close? Thanks!
