You answered your own question by saying you want it to be safe for all of you. Have a licensed pro do it. Consider his labor to be cheap insurance.
As for what brand of gas range; a friend of mine owns an appliance repair business and does HVAC work. I asked him the same question 7 years ago. He told me to get a GE, they have the fewest repairs.
