Think like it’s 1930. They didn’t have all the great weed control options we have now. If there was a bagger on that digger 90 years ago, you might have ended up with a bag that had 95# of vines, weeds, root balls, and clods, and 5# of potatoes somewhere in there. Picking them up by hand resulted in only potatoes in the bag. It was no big deal to go pick them up to bag them, as it was still way easier than having to dig them with the potato fork like they did the year before that digger first showed up on the farm.

You can add some kind of basket, I guess, but even with perfect weed control you’re going to have to deal with vines and clods.
