A little thicker than paint. I would use a knife or very wide trowel. Put on several VERY thin coats. It will dry super fast so the whole process won't take as long as you think. It took me finishing 120 sheets of my entire upstairs to finally get my technique figured out. Once you get the hang of it it's actually easy
