| First make sure all the wallpaper is off and any loose bits of drywall paper are removed. Next, coat the entire wall with Zinser Guardz or equivalent. If you skip this step you will be fighting blistering later. Next get some Durabond (in the brown bag not the white) and pre-fill any holes or deep gouges. Then thin some mud down and roll it on with a thick nap roller and follow behind with a wide drywall knife. Let it dry, give it a quick sand, and shine a light so it rakes across the wall and look for any imperfections. If there are only a few spots, add some blue chalk line chalk to the mud and spot coat. The blue is so you know where you have to sand after it dries. Follow those steps and you will have a good base to lay some primer and paint on.
