Most cases I don’t think it would be a problem.
I ran a Dayton gear case the wrong way for thousands of hours before it had problems. The tag said ccw for a reason. I replaced it with the same thing because the service life was more than acceptable.
But yes, most gear boxes will run either way, unless the tag specifies otherwise.
