Indiana | Dan it sounds as though you’ve made up your mind to liquidate some equity holdings but please keep in mind the tax implications. If possible one should sell the shares with the least taxable gain first and try to keep the most appreciated shares in order for your heirs to benefit from the stepped up basis. Would be a major tax savings on gains from 1977!

On edit: This would only apply within each individual fund if you are using specific ID for determining cost basis and not average cost, first in first out etc. Even if not using spec ID it’s still important to consider which find has highest appreciation. Also take into consideration long vs short term capital gains. If held less than one year the gains will be taxed at regular income tax rate.
