East Central Ia
Ran red planters for a lot years before switching to our current Deere.

As the red gauge wheels are trailing they will pull themselves into the openers, opposite of how a pushed gauge wheel will splay outward.

The shims aren’t near as important on a red planter. We always left a little space so the whims between the gauge wheel arms and row unit were loose, and tried to get the shims on the outside of the gauge wheel arm snug. We have even ran them with no shims on the inside without issue. I always wondered if over time that may allow more wear on the gauge wheel arms though.
