The old timers saying here (central Illinois) is you can prune them during any month with an "r". I prefer late winter or very early spring while the sap is down. It is important to prune fruit trees to encourage fruit production. I like to say you can raise fruit or you can raise wood, it is your choice. On fruit trees it is important to open them up to get more light into the canopy and to encourage stronger branches to withstand the weight of the fruit.
