Not that many differences in the two tractors, but there are a few and they may make some difference to you.
1. 466 vs 7.6l. The engines look a lot alike until you look inside. The 7.6l engines had a completely different top end/valve design and really breathed a lot better. You will experience better fuel economy, better starting and better response.
2. Mfwd axles. The 50 series came with both the ZF and Deere axles. By the 55 series, they were building all of their own. Not a big deal here as both are decent. Call it a wash.
3. Transmission updates. The 15-speed was new in the 50 series, and there were a few updates along. Depending on the serial number, there may not be a lot of difference. The updates were generally improvements, but not huge deals either.
4. Electronics and wiring. The 55 series moved to a lorge fuse and relay board to handle the electrical loads and had digital dash units. While generally better, this system worked better on cab tractors. Open station tractors had trouble with the dash units becoming unreadable and the fuse/relay boards corroding apart. Both are expensive. 50 series were generally simpler wiring.
