Keep it simple. Give them stalks and that's it. If you feed hay and stalks, don't add any more hay until the stalks are gone. This is what my bale feeders look like 24 hours after feeding a bale of stalks. Have a guy who bought stalks from me. He had to go the liquid route "to get the cows to eat them." His bales came from the same field mine did. I doubt every bale he randomly grabbed had an off flavor compared to the ones I fed.

Walked out to the lot where the cows were and they were perfectly silent. Started the skid loader and TMR tractor and parked them next to the cows and they bellered like they were starving. Put the equipment back in the shed a few minutes later and they were silent as soon as the engine shut off. Ice cream trucks have a bell for a reason.
