Subject: RE: Feeding / Grinding Cornstalks?

NC Iowa

Won't help for this year, but next year bale some stalks by raising chopper on combine and bale without raking.  I have done it a couple times, and the cows much prefer them.  This year I did a side by side, baled some behind combine, and right next to it raked and baled some, put both out the same day next to each other in the same 20' feeder.  Cows completely ate the one from combine, cried and cried for a day that they were going to starve, then started to eat the raked one, they also sorted the raked one much more.

I did the same thing back in 2014 with the same exact results.  I even had the rake set very light trying to leave a decent amount of residue this year, so it's not like it was running in the dirt.
