Years ago I used a platform on some really down corn. Had to run slow and ran a lot of dirt into tg e combine but got most of the corn. Couple years ago neighbors harvest some flat corn with a draper. In 2009 we had seversl hundred acres that went flat in Aug. That was our first year of 20" corn. Got along better without a reel tg an with. With 20" head we could run just about about any direction. Picked a lot of it across the rows running 1 way. After fighting down cornnnfor 3 tears we went back to 30s. If you know of someone with a 15 or 20" head you might try hiring him to pick it or rent his head.

You're saying 20" corn falls down worse? Why is that? I assumed more even spacing would promote larger, stronger stalks?

I don't know about your area, but around "here", corn along a fence row tends to grow tall and spindly. Probably something to do with shading. 15/20 in. corn seems to do the same thing, from my experience. Probably something to do with shading, is my guess.

The 15 in. corn around here is planted for silage. That's where I've made my observations.
