I have found that the newer tanks that are vented do not store as long as the old tanks with just the filler cap as a vent. Walk by the new tank and the smell of gas is quite strong where as didn't notice it as much with the old ones. We go through about 300 gal every 4 months. Vehicles don't start as good towards the end of that time period. Doesn't seem to affect mileage. I've covered one of the vents and that helps a bit.

+100, store gasoline in tanks with a pressure cap installed. You will lose much less volume and quality on a pressure cap fitted tank, plus it will suck in less moisture as things cool off. TSC or most farm stores have the pressure caps that screw into a std 2 inch pipe thread tank bung. Cost about $25.Removing that pressure cap on an 80+ degree day and listen to the volume of gasoline vapor that rushes out of that 2 inch hole. It will make you a believer in pressure caps on gasoline tanks.
