Northern Ohio | For my system, I want some shallow tillage to mix the crop/cover crop residue with the soil and add oxygen so that the microbes can break it down into “food” for the next crop. If I leave the residue on top with no contact with the soil and soil life, the residue breaks down from sunlight, much slower, but can be lost to the atmosphere.
As long as I don’t cause compaction, I don’t need any tillage deeper than a heavy disc.
One of the things we don’t talk about is organic matter that shows up on a soil test vs. active organic matter that does not show on a test but is very important. | |
