East Central wisconsin | Reading your title, burning organic matter, and microbial soil microbes. Makes me wonder again, what It is I run into from time to time? When moving trees with my larger spade. Which digs a hole 7' across and 5' deep. Once in a while in certain soils, at the very moment I start lifting the large soil plug, I smell a awefull scent similar to gas type smell. I've alway wondered what that is? And where its coming from? Almost takes my breath away at times, depending on which way the wind is blowing. Only lasts for a few seconds.
