You may be wise to skip the DVD idea and just get them into a digital file format and store them on a couple of different hard drives, thumb drives, or in the cloud. If stored on physical drives, make sure at least one copy is kept off site in case of a fire or other catastrophe. The reason I recommend skipping DVD is you will soon be faced with the same problem you are currently having with the VHS. DVD's are on their way to obsolete status just like the VHS are.
