I think the drought hurt your beans more then planting them deep. If I remember correctly, you have sandy soils. My sand farm had a 2.5 bean do 40bu/ac, the rest on my fields were clay loam and 2.9 at 54 bu/ac, 3.1 at 56/bu and a 3.6 at 77bu/ac.
