Warburg, AB
What do you see when you drive by?
You see that young local farmer, always struggling to get by.
The truck at the end of the field never shuts off and isn’t usually gone too long.
The young farmer doesn’t walk from auger tractor to truck. He runs!
You wonder to yourself, “ Why does this young guy do this to himself? Why doesn’t he just slow down and take it easy?”
Once the combine finally shuts down for the night, he runs his tired butt to the truck to deliver one last load to the bin or elevator.
“How was your day?” nobody asks him as he comes in late and reheats his supper. He is short with friends and family, his wife left because their future seemed futile. No kids, because it seemed like a life of turmoil with nothing but work, nothing to be gained. He is choked up because he is afraid that he may be the last generation in his family in 150+ years that may get the opportunity to farm.
He stays up too late looking at the computer and watching TV. This is the only time of day he has no stress and nothing to worry about and he doesn’t want it to end. He knows when he wakes in the morning, it will start all over again.
He hopes for a future, one where he can raise a family and build a home and share his love and pride of what he does with his family and friends.
He is a young farmer, this is what he does.
He hustles from job to job trying to keep the puppet strings that the markets, the bank, the weather, and his own pride keep pulling on him, pulled tight.
He keeps hustling, because it is the only thing he can control. He is terrified to fail. He is defiant in the face of “it can’t be done”.
So what you see driving by just may be more than you know.
