How rough/shiney are the sides? It sounds like feed is caking on the sides of the mixer. The prescription for that is to mix a few pounds of shelled corn. Just fill it till it starts slinging it then let it run, go in and get a cup of coffee and forget about it. The fixing the tube thin might help too, though, if it really is bad.
