Jim:
To answer your question about population in row versus drilled. I have steadily been dropping my drilled rate with no drop in yield!! Last year we had 22" rowed beans and 8" drilled beans their yields were the same but the lack of canopy in the 22" with the dry snap in June led to this and weed control issues. Thus I prefer to stay with the drilled. We plant at 160K and drill at the same with no yield loss. Last year I had one field that had poor germination in the drilled beans and I ended up with a final stand of 100K- no change in yield, same variety in all cases, all fields within 1/2 mile of each other. This year was the first year in a while I didn't plant a test of both. Next year I will drop the population to 130K in a test to see what happens there. It leads me to believe that the seed companies are doing a good job of convincing us to plant heavier than we really need to.
