To date we have merely disked it or field cultivated it under.............since we have to field cultivate anyway for weed control ahead of planting.

With respect to the pricey part--------as I indicated, oats is ok for getting limited benefits........just have to define objectives. For us, the 2-3.00 more per bu is worth it to get better weed control and the root systems.
