Didn't think I would have to pack a lunch. You need to try a few acres of cheat grass, Grows well doesn't get as tall as rye, matures earlier. Provides more root zone growth. Downside if you don't kill it the neighbors might you. Roots, while more on the surface do not go as deep. Finding good seed should not be a problem any seed cleaning outfit will give it to you. Don't plant any that is dark colored as it probably has take all. Doesn't matter for cover crop but if your combining back some for seed it doesn't yield well.
