Subject: Joys of this areas service industry..

S.C. Kansas
Posted this at another site...seems I'm not alone in experiencing
lazy,corner cutting by employers, employees.

------------------

Like about 30 million others I had the flue back in january..along with a good dose
of viral bronchitis. Thats what made me do what my asthma doc has told me all along.
Get rid of the carpets. So I went the whole enchalata..duct cleaning..new ac/furnace,
along with a new crossover duct...and had the carpet in the living room taken out
and laminate flooring put in. Everything seems to work great now...still trying to
decide on wall color for the light gray floor...However, all that came with a price..

The ductcleaner showed up almost totally incapacitated from his last drunk...
and told me he was hungover. This from a supposedly reputable company
from wichita. So this guy does a half assed job...I called the boss and told
him for 300$ it was pathetic. They sent out another cleaner and it was redone,
that guy told me the last guy only did about 50% of the duct and it wasn't
very good. I will admit I was kinda ignorant as to what to expect..You only get
about 80% of the duct clean. This from 2 different businesses..had stanley
steamer come out and looked..at the ducts, "Yep thats about all we can do"

I think it did help..

The next crew were the hvac guys to install a new 3 1/2 ton lennox and cole
man furnace. New crossover duct too. I walked out after the box for the
compressor was unloaded. Guy installing it had removed the old one and had
installed a new pad on top of the old one..which was half sunk into the ground and
half out. Moron was actually going to put the compressor on top of that..and
did. Said something about leveling it out 'later'. Brazes all the lines together,
hooks up the elect..There was another hvac dude in the house getting the
furnace in place. I argued with him about location of the thermostat. I wanted
it in the kitchen..where the original one was. He wanted it on the wall next
to the furnace..and though it was never said, his real reason was ease of
install. They ended up crawling under the home and running new therm.
wire. The owner comes out at the end of the day to check up and get
paid...walks right by the compressor which is sitting really crooked. The
next day their electrician came out to install wire for a 50 amp fuse...needed
a heavier wire than what the hvac guy had used..He had to crawl under the
home and noticed a few things that needed fixing..1st crew had left the
condensation tray to drain into the dirt under the house..And the crooked
compressor- he calls another guy to help get the wiring up..this guy tells
me that he will make the other crew come out and break the compressor
loose, remove the old pad..build it all up with bagged soil from their
warehouse,, reset the new pad and hook everything back up. This, to
my amazement actually happened the next day. No subsitute for an
angry man over his companys b.s. workmanship..and I imagine he gave
the owner a few choice words. One of their estimators and been around. Ran
a piece of pvc to the outside from the condensation tray too.

And now, if your still awake ;-)..the last story of this areas pathetic service
and workmanship...the removal of the living room carpet..465 sq ft..The installer
did a goodjob...got right on it .. carpet/pad out the door..scrapped the floor for
staples...vacuumed and had 6 feet of laminate laid in around 2 hours. And then
stopped. I had sequestered myself in a back bedroom and noticed that all of a
sudden it had gotten pretty quite. Walk out just as the installer was coming in,
And he goes.."do you want the bad news or the bad news?" Shaw flooring has
a flatness spec for floors to have a guarantee on them...3/16" in 10 ft. Against
the wall the floor was down 3/8 inch in 3 feet. He said he would be liable for
any seperation of the planks due to floor unevenness. The store called and
offered to remove what laminate was down and install rolled tile or carpet,
but the laminate could not be warrantied with the floor condition. They could go
ahead and put the planks down without a warranty. Which they did, but
i had them build up the low areas with the selitac underlayment. And they
are working just fine. As an aside..the installer should have built up the
low areas with leveling compound, but wasn't too keen on the xtra time to
let the stuff dry..etc. Said the compound breaks up eventually and makes crunching
noises when walked on..Used it myself in the kitchen and the floor is still solid.
He didn't say as much, but it was an 'out ' for him. I've opinion that all these
outfits I dealt with, the workers looked for the easy way too often.
