Sorry for your diagnosis.
Pockets of illness can be genetic, environmental and/or cultural. People of certain regions have similar habits and diets that can lead to predisposition to certain diseases. I see it frequently in my travels with pockets of smoking which is very visible.
My hometown has a pocket of breast cancer, it seems.
