Don't know about those other areas, but that area along the Mississippi River is an area in which people tend to eat a LOT of fried food. Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not, but people, especially those in the southern half of that area tend to eat a lot of fat pork (ribs, sausage, souse meat, etc.). I know it's not healthy but it shore is good. And, if what I see in line at the grocery store is any indication, they also drink a LOT of sugar laden drinks.
